Reading and the Literacy Pathway
Students who require additional support for their reading follow the Literacy Pathway of our curriculum. Pupils have 3 periods of literacy a week instead of Spanish lessons, throughout KS3.
Pupils with a standardised score below 90 on their KS2 Reading SAT sit an additional Access Reading test to check their reading age.
Pupils significantly below the level of the tests will initially follow a SEND intervention of Catch-up Reading.
Pupils identified as needing intervention to raise their reading level follow a programme based on developing vocabulary, inference and Guided Reading.
Remaining pupils are encouraged to develop their reading across the curriculum. Strategies such as TBQ develop use and understanding of technical vocabulary.
Reading for pleasure is modelled by teachers and promoted through tutor times and assemblies.
