Business is all around us and touches our lives in so many different ways. At the Nottingham Girls' Academy we provide learners with the opportunity to develop a greater understanding of the subjects that will empower them to make informed choices in the future, as well as the practical skills to succeed if they choose to pursue either Business as a career.


In Year 10 and 11 we offer the OCR Level 2 Cambridge National Certificate in Enterprise and Marketing.


Main Course Content

R064: Enterprise and Marketing Concepts

By completing this unit, learners will understand the main activities that will need to happen to support a start -up business and what the key factors are to consider when starting up a business. Learners will understand how and why customer segmentation is used and how to target a customer market. They will also develop an understanding of how to attract and retain customers, the techniques to use when developing products and how to investigate what makes a product viable.

R065: Design a Business Proposal

This unit will provide learners with the skills and knowledge to design a product proposal to meet a business challenge scenario. Learners will be able to identify a customer profile for their own product design, develop market research tools and use these to complete market research for their product. Learners will use their research outcomes to generate product design ideas, assess their strengths and weaknesses and work collaboratively with peers to gain feedback to inform final design decisions. Learners will complete financial calculations to select a pricing strategy and determine whether their proposal is viable.

R066: Market and Pitch a Business Proposal

This unit will provide learners with the skills and knowledge to create a brand identity and promotional plan for their product proposal, developed in Unit R065. They will be able to pitch their product proposal to an external audience after completing a practice pitch, and complete a review of both their pitching skills and product proposal, using their learning from this qualification, self-assessment and feedback generated.

Additional Support

Extra curricula support sessions are available at lunchtime and at the end of the Academy day. Resources will be uploaded to the Academy VLE for the students to access to assist with learning at home.


Further study/ Career Pathways

A-Level Business Studies, Accountancy and Economics, Banking, Business Management, Higher level Apprenticeship, Hospitality, etc.



Entry Requirements

Students will require a minimum of five GCSE or equivalent at grade 4 (BTEC Pass) or above including Mathematics and English. A Level 2 qualification in Business is not a course requirement.



The OCR Cambridge Technical Level 3 Extended Certificate in  Business Studies is made up of five units - three mandatory core units and two specialist units which explore particular topics in more depth.


In Year 12 all students take three core units:

Unit 1: Business Environment (120glh) 1hr 30min Exam

  • Understand different types of businesses and their objectives
  • How functional areas of business work together to support the activities of a business
  • The effects of different organisational structures on how a business operates
  • Use financial information to check the financial health of businesses
  • Understand the relationship between businesses and stakeholders
  • Understand the external influences and constraints on businesses
  • Understand why businesses plan
  • Assess the performance of businesses

Unit 2: Working in Business (60glh) 1hr 30min Exam

  • Understand Protocols to be followed when working in business
  • Understand factors that influence the arrangement of business meetings
  • Be able to use business documents
  • Be able to prioritise business tasks
  • Understand how to communicate effectively with stakeholders

Unit 4: Customers and Communication (60glh) Coursework

  • Understand who customers are and their importance to businesses
  • Understand how to communicate with customers
  • Demonstrate how to establish a rapport with customers
  • Be able to convey messages for business purposes
  • Know the legal constraints, ethical, and security issues that affect businesses

In Year 13 the following optional units are taken:

Unit 16: Principles of Project Management (60glh) Coursework

  • Understand the stages of project management
  • Understand the skills project managers need to have
  • Understand how and why projects are monitored and factors that influence a project
  • Be able to prepare project plans

Unit 20: Business Events (60glh) Coursework

  • Understand factors influencing the success of business events
  • Be able to prepare for a business event
  • Be able to support the running of a business event
  • Be able to review a business event



All units are coursework-based and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. The units are internally assessed and graded by teachers. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded upon successful completion of all units. Grades awarded are at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction* level, and are equivalent to one A level.


The Future

The course is vocational, helping to prepare students to enter the modern world of work, Modern Apprenticeship or to continue their studies at University. Coursework assignments are practical in nature and encompass real world learning at all times.
